The stables originally founded by the Transcontinental Street Railway Company. The 1889 Sanborn Atlas places it on the northwest corner of NW Glisan and Broadway [then Seventh street] and shows it as a substantial two story wood frame building.
As electricity replaced horsepower, the need for horses decreased. By June 1892, almost all of the City & Suburban’s 200 horses had been sold, with only 15—“the best of the lot”—remaining at the stables.
