Plans for a grand park at the top end of the cable line were first mentioned in January 1891, and it seems to have been in operation by June of that year. Over the years it was known both as “Portland Heights Park” and the more evocative “Cable Park.” It was located at the end of the cable car line “at the head of Spring Street”, where Ainsworth Elementary School is now. Concerts with singalongs of current songs with “illuminated words” on a screen were a popular activity.

Other features of the park over the years included a Ferris Wheel, and monkeys and baby bears in cages “to amuse the children.”

The last mentions of the park offering entertainment and amusements are from September 1904, suggesting that it closed permanently after that summer season. It was sold to N. P. Sorenson in 1906. He then sold it on to the Heights Park Holding Company in 1907, which erected a fine clubhouse on the site.
