cartney-substation.jpg

A large concrete electrical substation on the Oregon Electric main line, constructed in 1912 as the line was extended south to Eugene. The building seems to have been incorporated into the freight house alongside the track here. Note the “O” and “E” on the corner parapets, a common feature on Oregon Electric substations.

This substation was paired with a frame structure that served as a residence for the station agent and substation workers, being able to house three families. Similar buildings at the Orville and Lasen substations were located directly behind the substations, not alongside the track as a traditional station building would be.

This building was moved at some point in time a quarter of a mile east along Cartney Drive, where it was noted in the Linn County Inventory of Historic Resources in 1984. Sadly, this building has been demolished and a new home built in 2004 now occupies the site.
