A large brick substation on NE Knott Street, built to provide power for streetcars and commercial light and power needs in north and northeast Portland in December 1906. In PRL&P’s nomenclature, it was officially known as Substation “d”. Construction was started by the Portland General Electric Company, and a plaque above the main entrance to the building uses this name, but the plant was part of the property of the Portland Railway, Light & Power Company when it was opened for service.
The building is still extant as part of a PGE substation today, though rumor has it that it will be demolished soon.
