Steam motor service to Mount Tabor was inaugurated in early June 1889, extending the line from its previous Sunnyside terminus at SE Belmont and 34th. The line was then electrified in stages, with steam service continuing in the outer segment. The line was electrified to SE Morrison and 24th by September 29, 1893; to Sunnyside at SE Belmont and 34th by October 14, 1893, and finally to Mount Tabor at SE Belmont and 69th by <July?> 1896.
The line was extended further to SE Yamhill and 88th in December 1912, shadowing the route of the short-lived Portland, Mount Tabor & Eastern Railway Company’s line from the 1890s. This section was operated for a short time as a stub line with a connection at the old terminus, but by early 1913, cars were running through from Portland to the new terminus.
