Steam motor service to Mount Tabor was inaugurated in early June 1889, extending the line from its previous Sunnyside terminus at SE Belmont and 34th. The line was then electrified in stages, with steam service continuing in the outer segment. The line was electrified to East Morrison and Twenty-fourth by September 29, 1893; to Sunnyside at East Belmont and Thirty-fourth by October 14, 1893, and finally to Mount Tabor at East Belmont and Sixty-ninth by <July?> 1896.

The line was extended further to SE Yamhill and Eighty-eighth in December 1912, largely following the path of the short-lived Portland, Mount Tabor & Eastern Railway Company’s line from the 1890s. This section was operated for a short time as a stub line with a connection at the old terminus, but by early 1913, cars were running through from Portland to the new terminus.
