Formed in 1903 to take over the franchises and rights-of-way of the West Side & Suburban Railway Company, the Oregon Traction Company shared some officers with that previous company, notably President Andrew Graydon. This new company fared slightly better than its predecessor – eventually building a mile or so of track within Portland’s city limits – but any progress made was slow and tortuous, and its relationship with the Portland city council was fractious. Their assets were sold to the United Railways Company in March 1906 at public auction, but only after an injunction on the sale brought about by a former financial backer of the line, John M. Gardiner, was lifted.
