After the Portland & St. Johns Railway Company’s plans for a second streetcar line to the St. Johns peninsula were thwarted by the consolidation of competing street car companies, the management looked for new routes and alternative ways of getting their line built. Francis McKenna had $28,000 ready to spend and lots of property to sell in University Park and Portsmouth!
To that end, the company was reincorporated as the Portland, Vancouver & St. Johns Railroad Company in March, 1905. The route up to St. Johns was substantially the same, but continued into and through St. Johns itself, presumably to gain additional local support for the line. Despite these efforts, this line was never built.
New to the venture was an extension from the north end of Union (MLK) Avenue up to Hayden Island – this franchise was passed down to the Portland Railway Company and was used to extend the Vancouver line along a new alignment to the Columbia River north of Woodlawn.
