Not to be confused with the modern-day Portland & Western Railroad (PNWR).
This company was formed to take over the failing Barnes Heights & Cornell Mountain Railway with the intention of extending the line over the hills and down into Hillsboro. A subsidiary company, the Portland & Hillsboro Construction Company, was formed to build the new section of line. The plan was to take up the track that headed northwest past Mount Calvary Cemetery and reuse it to start the new line to Hillsboro. Despite newspaper reports stating that work was to commence in September 1895, I have yet to find evidence that any track was actually laid as part of the new venture.
By November 1896, cars had ceased running and all the track was taken up and reused by the City & Suburban Railway Company on their Eleventh street branch. There would be no rail service to Mount Calvary Cemetery until 1911 when the Kings Heights line was opened.
