Yet another real estate stub line handed over to the Portland Railway, Light & Power Company for operation. Richard Thompson has suggested that this line opened in 1910 with track heading north from SE Bybee along Reed College Place to the college campus, but I don’t believe that can be true at all. An annotated 1911 railway map of Portland shows the proposed extension to Reed College and lists it as being under City Ordinance 24704, from Wednesday January 24, 1912, with a title of “24704 - Granting a revocable permit to the Reed Institute to construct a street railway track on Bybee Ave from the west line of East Thirty-second St to Reed College Place.” Already, that places this proposed northerly extension two years too late! See the chronology below for further details. The extension to Reed College did exist, but only in 1912 during construction work. The rest of the line was already open and running in this time frame.

Similarly, when the Eastmoreland line closed in 1926, it didn’t “merge with the Errol Heights line” at all. It closed and was replaced by a bus service. The Errol Heights streetcar line continued as a technically disconnected stub line until 1929, with cars traversing the old Eastmoreland line only to provide access to and from the Sellwood car barn!
