In general, this map’s resolution is too low to make out routes and street names in the highly detailed sections (though you can zoom way, way in in Photoshop if you really need to), but it does show some things that other maps don’t.
- The short-lived Portland, Mount Tabor & Eastern steam motor line that ran down the eastern slope of Mount Tabor from SE Belmont and 69th to the vicinity of Russellville. Curiously, by 1896, this line had already closed and the iron rails torn up and sold.
- The similarly short-lived City & West Portland Park Motor Company’s steam line from SW Hamilton down to the deep and unsettled southwest, somewhere in the vicinity of modern SW Taylors Ferry Road and Barbur Blvd.
- It also has a good, though perhaps simplified, overview of the Metropolitan Railway Company’s Fulton Park cemeteries extension, and the Oregon City line’s original route along Main Street in Milwaukie.
- Curiously, this is one of the few maps that show the City Park cable line’s extension past the park into Melinda Heights, even though that section had been abandoned by 1896.
