One of the “second generation” streetcar companies that transitioned from horsecar operation to electric motive power. The company was acquired by the first Portland Traction Company in early 1888, but continued to operate under its original name until it was merged into the Portland Consolidated Street Railway Company on August 1, 1892 [Labbe].

The company was also referred to as the “Washington-street company” after their main trunk line west along Washington Street to the City Park. Branches from Washington ran north along NW Sixteenth (then known as North Fifteenth) and south along SW Thirteenth (then South Eleventh).
