1890_HolladaysAddition_2500px.jpg

A splendid “birds-eye” map of Portland with the new real estate development of Holladay’s Addition front and center. The streetcar lines of the east side are clearly visible on the map, and – for once! – appear to actually be depicted completely accurately. The Irvington line (which opened in October 1890) cuts through the addition, and the Fifth Street, Vancouver, Albina and St. Johns lines are also present and accounted for. No lines can be discerned in Portland proper because of the perspective, but the massive trestle and power house chimney of the cable line can be seen in the far distance.

Quite remarkably, this map can be accurately dated because of an article in the September 25, 1890 edition of The Morning Oregonian, [link] which says:

**THE BEST VIEW YET—**There has just been published a view of Portland that for attention to detail and a careful regard for general effect, surpasses anything ever before issued. This is a magnificent lithograph taken in birds-eye, showing the entire cities of Portland, East Portland and Albina. The observer is placed on [illegible] high eminence commanding a perfect view of the trio of cities, and with a magnifying glass of great power to his eye, he has such a clear vision of the panorama spread before him that he is able to distinguish clearly every house and distinct location in each of the three cities. The map was cut on the stone especially for the Oregon Real Estate Company, owners of Holladay’s addition property, simply as a matter of enterprise on their part that might tend in a measure to advertise abroad the city in which they have invested in so largely. The people of Portland and vicinity are respectfully invited by the above company to call at their offices at No. 3 Morrison street and help themselves to these views which will be distributed free of charge among the residents of this commonwealth.
